A controversy has erupted within the Hearts of Iron IV community after a Turkish player was reportedly banned from the game's official Discord server over the use of a real-life photograph of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a profile picture.
According to screenshots shared online and reports by Turkish media, the player challenged the moderation decision and was reportedly told that changing or removing the Atatürk photograph could lead to the ban being lifted. A moderator identified as chakerathe reportedly described Atatürk as a “controversial” historical figure and referred to rules concerning the use of photographs of real historical figures.
Moderator's Explanation Sparked Further Controversy
The most disputed part of the exchange came when the moderator reportedly referred to Atatürk's historical connection with the Committee of Union and Progress and discussions surrounding the events of 1915.
Those comments quickly became the central point of criticism among Turkish players.
It is important to distinguish the moderator's comments from an official historical position by Paradox Interactive. The remarks were made in the context of an individual Discord moderation case, while Paradox's subsequent response focused on the enforcement of its community rules rather than adopting the moderator's historical characterization.
The Historical Context
Atatürk's relationship with the Committee of Union and Progress is a documented part of his early political career. Historical sources record that Mustafa Kemal joined the organization in 1907 and attended its 1909 congress, while also documenting disagreements with its leadership, particularly over the role of the military in politics.
By 1915, Mustafa Kemal was serving as an Ottoman military commander and played a prominent role during the Gallipoli campaign.
For that reason, the historical questions surrounding his early political associations, his military career and the events of 1915 are separate subjects. A political association or past membership by itself does not establish individual responsibility for every policy associated with the Ottoman government.
Paradox Responds to the Controversy
The controversy eventually prompted a response from Batya, the Game Director of Hearts of Iron IV.
Batya acknowledged the importance of Atatürk as the founder of the Republic of Türkiye and said that the game's moderation system was not intended to make judgments about historical figures.
The statement also addressed the Discord rules directly. According to Batya, the recent discussion had raised concerns about how the rule concerning real-world figures used as profile pictures was being enforced.
Paradox acknowledged that the rule had not been applied consistently and said it would review the rule itself, as well as the bans and other actions taken during the incident. The company also indicated that changes would be made where necessary.
Historian Emrah Safa Gürkan Joins the Backlash
The controversy soon moved beyond the game's existing community.
Historian and content creator Prof. Dr. Emrah Safa Gürkan, who has publicly discussed his extensive experience with Paradox games, also commented on the incident and joined calls for a boycott.
Gürkan criticized what he described as hostility and historical distortion and called for the issue to be corrected and addressed. His comments were subsequently shared widely among Turkish gaming communities and reported by Turkish media.

His involvement attracted additional attention because of his background as a historian and his long-standing interest in strategy games.
Steam Reviews Turn Overwhelmingly Negative
The backlash also spread to Steam, where large numbers of users posted negative reviews referring to the Discord controversy.
By September 24–25, Hearts of Iron IV's recent Steam reviews had fallen into the “Overwhelmingly Negative” category. At the same time, the game's overall English-language rating remained “Very Positive”, reflecting years of accumulated player reviews rather than only the current controversy.
This distinction is important: the recent score reflects a sharp wave of reviews connected to the ongoing dispute, while the overall rating includes feedback collected over a much longer period.
Steam also has systems for identifying periods of off-topic review activity, meaning that review-score adjustments should not automatically be described as a simple “review reset.”
From a Discord Dispute to a Wider Backlash
What began as a dispute over a profile picture and Discord moderation has developed into a much broader discussion involving historical interpretation, community moderation and the relationship between Paradox and its Turkish player base.
The controversy also highlights the importance of distinguishing between statements made by an individual moderator and the official position of Paradox Interactive.
While the moderator's comments about Atatürk and 1915 triggered much of the backlash, Paradox's subsequent response focused primarily on the inconsistent enforcement of its Discord rules and the need to review the decisions made during the incident.
For now, the controversy remains unresolved. Paradox has indicated that it will review the relevant rules and moderation actions, while Turkish players and prominent members of the country's gaming community continue to debate the company's handling of the situation.
