“Is BLACKPINK Disbanding?”
One of the groups most closely followed by K-pop fans, BLACKPINK has been making headlines in recent years less for its group activities and more for the members’ solo careers and questions about the group’s future. In particular, when their seven-year contract with YG Entertainment came to an end in 2023, numerous speculations began to emerge about the group’s future.

Especially after this point, the members focused on their individual careers, and BLACKPINK’s group activities became almost nonexistent. As the members began to appear together less frequently, questions about the fate of their contracts started to arise among fans. Then, one by one, the members announced that they had established their own companies and would continue their individual activities under their respective labels while continuing to work with YG Entertainment for group activities.

This situation divided K-pop fans into two opposing camps. One side argued that BLACKPINK had actually disbanded long ago but that it had not yet been officially announced, while the other maintained that the group had not disbanded and was simply taking a break to return with stronger projects after the members had focused on their solo careers. Although fans may not want to accept it, was 2023 the end of an era for BLACKPINK?

This decision was welcomed by many fans. Some BLACKPINK fans, who call themselves Blinks, argued that the members had not been able to make their own decisions freely enough while under YG Entertainment and had therefore been unable to do everything they wanted for BLACKPINK. They believed that establishing their own companies was a more sensible decision for both the members and the group’s future. However, despite the time that has passed, the members have continued to focus on their solo careers, while group activities have remained extremely limited.

The lack of group activities in the following years, the fact that the members have rarely been seen together, and the perception that even their occasional reunions seem rather forced have strengthened the belief that the group may disband. Moreover, even the title of the DEADLINE album was interpreted by some fans as a sign that the old BLACKPINK era had come to an end. Of course, an album title alone is not evidence that a group is going to disband. However, when considered alongside the other developments, it is not difficult to understand why such interpretations have emerged.

August 2026, in particular, marked the group’s tenth anniversary. A music group’s ability to remain active for ten years is considered a significant achievement, and such an important milestone holds great meaning, especially for K-pop fans like Blinks. However, criticism that the event organized to celebrate the tenth anniversary was not given enough care, along with rumors that only two members would attend while the other two would be unable to make it, sparked strong reactions among fans.

Following the backlash, all four members attended the celebration. While some fans welcomed this positively, many others began to argue that their attendance had been forced and expressed their desire to see BLACKPINK become more active. Perhaps the fact that even the members who were initially not going to attend ended up joining at the last minute following such intense backlash was a significant indication that they feared a fan boycott, wasn't it?

However, what is particularly striking here is that, despite the group’s tenth anniversary having been known about well in advance, so many questions arose regarding the event. Even rumors suggesting that some members would be unable to attend such an important occasion because of their busy schedules left the door open to widespread speculation about the group’s future. Some fans, in particular, even began to claim that the members no longer cared about BLACKPINK.

So, do the members genuinely no longer want to be part of BLACKPINK? In my opinion, this is one of the most important points in the debate. The fact that the members have focused on their solo careers since establishing their own companies, while group activities have remained limited, had already provided some significant clues about BLACKPINK’s future.

Despite all these signs, many fans still react negatively even to rumors that BLACKPINK might disband. After all, although the group has technically remained together since 2023, it has not had many substantial group activities during this time. In that sense, remaining a group and disbanding seem almost like the same thing. In fact, many K-pop followers believe that disbanding would make more sense than having the members come together reluctantly, make a few heart signs, and then rush back to their solo careers. Perhaps 2023 really was the year BLACKPINK came to an end. Although there have been numerous signs of their disbandment since then, fans have not interpreted the situation as a “disbandment” because no official announcement has been made.

Just as important as whether BLACKPINK will disband is the question of what direction the group will take from here. So, what do you think about this? Will BLACKPINK reunite and make a powerful comeback, or will this comeback happen simply because they fear the backlash from their fans?
